Spencer Hall is great and just as funny in conversation as he is a writer.
Phillips is hit or miss for me. I either love it or hate it. His coverage of Tennis' grand slams are so self-indulgent.
Wright Thompson is great at what he does and really doesn't misfire.
Michael Weinreib is probably the best in the business of sports writing right now.
S.L. Price is excellent, as well.

Sports writing seems tough because, like any good writing, the spine of the piece has to involve good story telling and character development. But given the nature of sports, there aren't a lot of good narratives to latch onto, just analysis of the game's finite set of rules and inflated attempts at making the same headlines (rivalries, pseudo-controversial soundbytes) seem important year in and year out.
