Why would you be willing to pay that much for Higuain but not for Benteke?
I mean, I don't want to pay that much for Higuain, but he's been scoring for a top team in a top league for a long time. Benteke could be a one season wonder for all we know. Villa has produced other players recently who did really well for them but average once they earned moves to bigger clubs.
Suarez and Rooney are probably the only players who are worth the price tag attached. I'd take both in a second. I'd also take Felliani at 25.
I think there is a good chance we will miss out on our transfer targets this summer. Just the way the market is shaping up points in that direction. Now is the season for Wenger to unearth some gems. I'd really like to see us go after Lamela since we struck out on Jovetic. Or Marek Hamsik. Or Adem Ljajic. Or Soldado. All would cost a pretty penny, but we've forced ourselves to overpay for any quality in this market because we missed out on our early targets.

should I have faith and get Cazorla on my new away kit?
Yes. I wanna get my Zelalem jersey now. Vintage value or something.

the only reason I'm not is because he doesn't have a squad number

Suarez is quickly becoming overpriced and Rooney has been overpriced for a couple seasons. They shouldn't try to pay too much for them. I'd rather not be left with buyers remorse.

those two are superstars both on the field and off. particularly with Rooney, his marketability is huge. kit sales, more exhibition availability in this Asian markets. big stars are huge for commercial too.

I agree that Rooney is huge. Especially if you bring him to London with a new kit. Only problem is that he's getting slower and old. Suarez is not as marketable. He's big but getting a little too expensive. I'm just not sold that Suarez will be a great fit and produce on the same level. That will kill his marketability if he isn't great. Very risky buy in my opinion but I would rather Rooney based purely on commercial value.

I don't get that. why don't you think suarez fits? he's perfect for our system.

On the back of the kit it would be "S.CAZORLA" right? no space between the period and s and c?

No, he's priced about right, based on his value to his club and his contract length, as well as his actual ability.

What does this even mean?

Rooney has never been a player who has relied on speed for anything. He's actually become much more complete of a player, with his ability to create and score goals. He can play wide, centrally or up top. If he can take care of himself, which is a big if, has the ability to play well into his late 30's. If you are buying him for 40 mil at his age, clearly you can deal with a depreciating asset. If you have that much to spend, you clearly aren't looking to get back a monetary amount, unless he fails completely, which is certainly a risk.
Suarez is a player who can fit into our scheme as well as anyone. Technical, superb on the dribble, he can start or end moves, can play by himself up top, and is versatile enough to play in any of the front four attacking positions. Not only that he, like Rooney, has actually produced in the PL. That type of proven goalscoring ability is worth the cost.
It's not like the 70 mil we have does us any good sitting in the bank.

if arsenal were to somehow reel in both higgy and lamela i would have to become a fan. 2 of my favorite river plate players of all time.

My level of excitement on a 1-10 scale..
Rooney - 5 (might be a 7 if he had a different name and same body)
Suarez - 9 (he's just so god damn talented and only 26... 10 if he had a different name)

9
10
both would be massive, massive signings and very helpful to our chance of winning a trophy

You won't get either so don't get your hopes up

Probably not, but the pursuit itself is pleasing. We've restricted ourselves, because of the debts, and the incessant attention by the media placed on our trophyless run, to building up also-rans, hidden gems, and youth. While Suarez and Rooney are great players, they just don't feel right for the big bid if that makes any sense. It doesn't feel like they are coming here. The fact of the matter is that we need to spend big, not out of necessity per se, but to make a statement of intent that we are ready to compete financially in the 21st century.

Arsenal should have had their business done by now. Really poorly done yet again. They've let big names move (Falcao, Cavani) and now LFC is looking at their transfer prices and doing a double-take at Arsenal's offer.
Jovetic makes no sense to me. At £22m it blows my mind why Arsene didn't go in.

yeah I was speaking hypothetically. though I think there's a 4% chance we get Suarez and 2.5% chance we get Rooney. very precise mathematical formulas led to those figures.
I don't know why we're leaving it late either or focusing on unlikely targets. our interest in Suarez should've been over by now. we should've pushed it to a resolution. I still think we can get Higuain, but it'll probably cost us £30m. I really don't want Fellaini. I'll be kinda if he's our big signing.
I do think we will spend, but leaving it late, it'll be interesting to see who we get. guys like bender, suarez, etc, guys we know we've bid on, were/are pipe dreams. we're going to have to overpay in this market.

Arsene probably could have gotten Suarez for £40m at the very beginning of the summer, which would have been a bargain imo. Now LFC have seen his international striking partner, who Suarez has unequivocally outplayed on the international stage, go for £55m. I can only imagine the LFC owners laughing hysterically at a £35m bid when looked at that way.

Probably, but we really only need one or two players. We have a pretty good team right now, which is very close to winning things. I'd rather buy superlative players than settle. We've been settling for 8 years in the transfer market, so even if we don't get anyone, I think we should be able to compete, especially this year where all the major teams have managers in their first or second year (I don't know how to label Mourinho).
We are nearly two deep at every position (save for CB, ST and DM, though we have players who can play those positions in the squad), and this is the first year since 2005 we haven't had a major departure.
Our young midfield has grown together, and we haven't lost a game since March 3rd. We have lots of young talent that is eager to impress, and we've cleared out a bunch of dross from the wage bill. We've had a great summer so far. Of course, all this can change in an instant, but on paper this should be our best team since 2009-10, which was a title winning team, if not for (again) injuries.

yeah...sometimes I wonder how much outrageous buyout clauses affect other purchases. cavani didn't go for that because it was his worth. he went for that because crazy arse PSG was the only team that paid his buyout. Monaco for Falcao similar to in that it was so outrageous and splashy, it can't really be used to gauge other offers imo.
