Was the entire Gendry TV arc just a round about way to foreshadow Mance's (Actually Lord o bones) eventual BBQ?
I still don't understand why the TV writers went that direction in lieu of some of the items they cut (Arya & The Tickler, Coldhands, Harrenhal, etc...) Just to demonstrate the power of kings blood?
ETA: Though Melisandra's scene with Gendry was a welcomed addition.

What do you mean?
Gendry took the place of Edric Storm, who was the bastard that Davos saved in the books from being sacrificed.
