Yea it has to do with an invasive species destroying the habitat of the turtles. I pulled it from reddit, and a lot of people there wondered why they didn't just open up goat meat markets there rather than shoot them and let them rot. I don't know how good a wild goat would taste, but I know shooting them from a chopper would be fun as hell.

those islands are uninhabited, except for scientists, so no real market for the meat, and no point in hauling them all the way back to Ecuador. Buzzards are gonna eat good for awhile, if there are any buzzards out there.
