When I bought my macbook, I was told the battery lasted 8 hours. Two years later, I'm lucky if it lasts two hours...how many miles should a Tesla owner expect per charge by 2016? I'd hate to depend on a car that has the life expectancy of my laptop battery.
There's an 8 year, unlimited mileage, no-fault warranty on them. They will replace a failed battery for any reason other than deliberate damage with a pack of equal or greater capacity and range than when the original was factory new. Also, the batteries used in vehicles are much, much higher quality than the ones used in laptops and cell phones, especially Tesla's batteries. Tesla roadsters have been on the road for 5 years and have seen little to no loss of range. Batteries have been lab-tested to half a million miles and have seen little loss of range. And today's batteries are better and cheaper than those 5 year old roadster batteries. In summary, I wouldn't worry about it.

"Smartest" battery in the world. This is a car you can have for a lifetime.
