Maybe the over fertilization. But light and frequent watering is a myth. Roots don't care.
Turf makes thatch. Nothing you can do. Grass clippings play no role in it. Verticut too deep now and you may kill it.

My bro-in-law sprays beer on his lawn occasionally for thatch. He says the yeast helps speed up decomp of the thatch.
