Cap Update: Saints have $3.1 Million before signing rookies

So that gives us around $1 - 1.5 million for any potential FAs. Seems like a release of someone would be in order to get any solid starter at this point. But since the draft is over, the vets should start to be getting desperate as we get closer to the season. Wonder if we could eek out a 1 year deal with a LT like Bryant McKinnie with what we have now.
Charles Woodson is still floating around out there, but he was asking for a lot previously for a 36 year old Safety. Wonder if we could potentially bring in Sharper 2.0 for a 1 year deal.

The Saints can spend some of their cap savings to sign a remaining free agent. They’ll also need about $1.6 million to $2 million in cap space to sign their rookies.

I don't see a more important acquisition left for us in the FA market at this point moreso than OT.
1 to 1.5M is about what you pay for a 2nd string RT. If they cut Strief they might be able to get a decent starter out of it, but out of Strief or Brown, I would vehemently choose Strief.

What can John Abraham be had for? And like most I'm a little surprised that no vet LT has been signed other than whatshisname who mainly played RT.

Jason Smith? I think he's insurance if Brown doesn't work out. He couldn't hack it at LT under the Rams, and eventually started as RT.

I say besides vet minimums, we stand still, trim some more fat (Streif), and roll the cap space over til next year. I don't think anyone in this range will make a difference, and we all know that we will desperately need any help next year cap-wise that we can get.

Don't know, but it would probably be out of the range of what we are looking at for someone who would probably only be a situational pass rusher in the 3-4 given his age.

Jason Smith?
Free Agent Tackles
Tyson Clabo
Eric Winston
Bryant McKinnie
Jared Gaither
among others... McKinnie and Gaither are the only two of I know to have extensive LT experience.

I don't know man. A warm body at RT and LT is a scary thing in the NFL. I think if they cut Strief they could find a pretty good RT. I'd feel a lot more comfortable with at least one question mark filled in at the start of the season.
We've missed the boat on finding a veteran LT to be honest. We just don't have the money unless we went shopping in the old folks home.

I feel you about the uncertainty at OT. Cutting Strief is almost a must at the point.
I honestly think we're gonna be good at RT between Jones, Harris, Smith, and one out of Brown/Armstead. I also think that one of Brown, Armstead, or Smith is going to step up and win the starting LT job.
An ideal scenario would have been something like McKennie (just missed out on him), 1yr/$2mil and start Armstead at RT. Gathier is still out there, but who knows how much who is looking for. Like I said, I just don't see anyone worth the little bit of money we have left, and feel like we're better off using the cap space for next year.

He did pretty damn good in 2011. Getting hurt last year sucked but he's a good RT when healthy. They probably want to wait and see him in camp

Just missed on him? What? He only had serious conversations with the Dolphins, Chargers, and Ravens.

I can't believe it's happening. 3+M is kinda too much

What's all this have to cut Strief stuff? He'll be starting at RT, imo...has been majority of the last two seasons.

Yeah, Strief isn't going anywhere. I don't believe there is anyone out there that is a sure fire upgrade over him, that would be affordable.

I meant as in he just signed. Obviously it wasn't literal...

Yeah, and he's also been getting beat like a drum, and has been outplayed by guys making significantly less than what he is making. We're going to be in a worse situation cap-wise next year than we were this year, and we have to re-sign our 2nd-3rd best player on the team. Doesn't seem like a very difficult decision to me.

His injuries have kept him from being 100%.
Question is...is a 100% healthy Strief gonna be able to beat out Marcel or Harris?

I agree. You at least give him training camp to compete. If he is head and shoulders above the other guys, then I have no problem keeping him.

He was bad last season, like just about everyone, and he was hurt. He was good in '11.
I'd rather have some guys that are proven at the tackle positions to start the season than going in with unknowns. If Jones and Harris beat him in camp then that's one thing, but I doubt that happens.
