I personally intensely dislike the wave in Tiger Stadium. It obviously distracts the participants from watching the game.
It always seems like the Tigers start to play poorly once the wave is started in Tiger Stadium. I've witnessed this over and over.
How would you feel, as a player, when the fans ditract themselves from cheering for the team?
That being said, there's no way, that I can see, to stop it. The student section must lead by refusing to participate. It would take quite a campaign against the wave to get the students to refuse to participate in it.
