One thing we could say about the New Orleans Saints without hesitation, as the 2013 draft arrived: They had to get better against the pass.

Enter Texas safety Kenny Vaccaro, the top player at his position in this draft and a dynamic talent that could do wonders for the Saints’ secondary.

Vaccaro shows great range out of the safety position, and Texas utilized him in multiple ways — dropping him deep in coverage, asking him to step up on the run, even sliding over to deal with slot receivers. The Saints could do all of that, too, and his arrival might allow them to move Malcolm Jenkins back to cornerback.

New Orleans might have preferred to trade down here initially, since Roger Goodell stripped the franchise of its 2013 second-round pick during the bounty scandal. By staying put, though, the Saints addressed a weak spot on their roster with a talented player.

Grade: B-plus. Vacarro’s an excellent player and he should bring a lot to the table for a Saints team that faces great offense after great offense on their schedule. The downside of this pick is that New Orleans had to pass on a much-needed edge rusher to make it.
