because no matter when you start fishing, there isn't a deadline in the middle of the fishing season that forces you to get another.
And no matter when you do it you stand the chance to get screwed. What about all the guys that fish in the fall?
You end up in the same place. And spend the exact same amount of money in a lifetime. You really don't spend 30 for a 'season'.
1 year from date of purchase is a decent alternative.
But I can get a license online, by phone, or at just about any gas station. So I just don't see that big of an issue, it costs the same, it isn't an inconvenience.

Minimal percentage if Jan 1 - Dec 31.

They're covered in Jan 1 - Dec 31.

Not true. Due to the expiration being in the middle of the damn summer, I bet a shitload of people have to double up on fishing licenses.

I'm going to spend $30 this year.

Best option: year from date of purchase.
Next best option: Jan 1 - Dec 31.
Worst option: Jul 1 - Jun 30.

Not that big of an issue. But it does make people double up on licenses. It's like giving year round ski lift passes that expire on Jan 15.

the same situation as your guy starting in April.

Yes, and they are covered for 365 days, buying ONE license a YEAR. Christ, if you fish for 20 straight years, you cant spend more than 300 bucks without overlapping licenses for a freshwater resident license. No matter the expiration
quote:again, that one that you bought on the back half prevents if from happening again the next year. Unless you just didn't fish last year....since June. But this situation will happen no matter what if you don't buy licenses often.
I'm going to spend $30 this year.

get a lifetime license, and never worry again.
I suspect the June 30 expiration has more to do with hunting than fishing. Picture having to buy all your hunting licenses again on January 1st, because they expired Dec. 31st. Holy cow would the bitching be non-stop.
Anyhow, I got a Lifetime License in 1998 and never looked back. It has way more than paid for itself by now, so I bought one for my youngest kid too.
