Somethings that hurt the defense last year:
1) No head coach. Team in general disarray.
2) A switch to a zone scheme. Was a poor fit for the secondary and the linebackers.
3) Relied too much on generating pressure with the front four. The guys who could do it (Galette, Hicks for example) didn't see enough playing time. Ellis retained his starting job all year.
4) An offense that sputtered at times for long stretches, including TO's and the running game being nonexistent at times.
I really think Spag's system would have been successful eventually but it would take a lot more
time to get the right personnel. The switch to a one gap 3-4 press man scheme gives us the best chance for success in the immediate.

The one thing you can bet on is the D will be better than last year.
