1700x is first gen 8c/16t ryzen on 14 nm process.
2600 is 2nd gen 6c/12t ryzen on 12 nm process.
I would go with the 2600 because of the better ram compatibility plus newer manufacturing process.
If your nephew still needs the 2 extra cores, the 1700x isn't a bad buy.
If your nephew is purely gaming, the 8600k isn't a bad buy either.

Kinda impulse bought an older razer blade 2014 for $200.
Not a bad little machine so far. Trackpad and keyboard are realing freaking awesome. Having the 4720hq and 870m are a nice plus too.
Battery is shot, so I gotta spend ~$70 on a new one.
