My girlfriend has somehow never seen the Wizard of Oz; I advised her to watch it before seeing this one. Is that necessary?

Ummm, I'd imagine to consider yourself a human being it's necessary. Seriously, how do you avoid that film growing up?

Not really. This story doesn't have anything (that I can recall) that needs further explanation to push the story along. If anything, this movie will help her explain the Original; however, I would advise her to watch the Wizard of Oz first. It's just the route everyone has taken; therefore, it is the route she should take.

As for a movie. I really enjoyed it. I thought there was a lot of cleverness to it. It did seem predictable at times, but of course it was something we, who have seen the original, would expect.

I think it's supposed to be a prequel, so no.
