Red Sox owner Frazee cared more about his theater his productions at the time.
Also, Ruth continually wanted to hike up his salary every year, and Frazee did not want to pay him that much. He received over double the amount of the recent sale of the great Tris Speaker.
I think the most interesting part is that the Yankees and the Red Sox had a very amicable relationship back then.
Ruth's numbers would have been even more untouchable IMO if the Yankees never moved out of the Polo Grounds. In his three seasons, he hit 54, 59, and 35 home runs. The 1922 season (with 35 homers) was suspension riddled, and he only played 110 games. While Ruth continued to mash in Yankee stadium, I think he could have surpassed 750 homers if they continued to share the Polo Grounds with the Giants.
