I think the problem is that when he was the best player in the league he was on an awful team and conducted himself like a raging a-hole. (didn't make teammates better, bitched for a trade, etc.)

And it was very debatable. Duncan, Dirk, Wade and LeBron all had legit arguments as the best during that time (say 2005 to 2010).
