Ben: "What about me?"
Jacob: "What about you?"

I loved this scene. Ben was put in his place and in the end, chose vengeance.

He may have put Ben in what he felt Ben's place was: a worthless tool who doesn't mean shite. The guy goaded Ben into killing him. Simply put Jacob is an absolute a-hole, probably the biggest one in the show, and all this is his damn fault, but he just sits on his arse and lets them "help themselves". If Jacob had just talked to Ben over the years, Ben would have never gone down the dark path that he did. Ben needed some guidance, but the only guidance he received was from an entity who merely used him as a tool who encouraged his life to go along a downward spiral. When Jacob said "What about you?" He may as well have said "Can you still not take a hint? After 30 years I have refused to see you, and you really think I give a damn about you? Eat shite and die you pathetic mother fricker." The guy's death should have been worse than Ben merely stabbing him.

Ben was never special. He was never acknowledged by Jacob as the true leader of the island. He chose to purge the Dharma Initiative after murdering his own father. He stole Alex from Russo when she was just an infant. He manipulated and lied to everyone. He kidnapped Jack, Kate and Sawyer, and probably would have killed Kate and Sawyer if Jack had not helped them escape. Eventually, he murdered Locke so he could get back to the island (one of the saddest scenes imo).

Sure, Jacob could have interfered in Ben's life at an early age and would have caused him to grow up to be a nice man, but like I said Ben was never special so why should he have done this? It's like asking why God doesn't help those who eventually become murderers. Jacob gives the people who come to the island free will without interfering. Ben has no one to blame but himself for becoming the liar, manipulator and murderer that he truly is.
