shitty decision, but understandable given the cynicism of Olympic sports. Wrestling is a niche sport in the largest TV markets, and those who do watch it aren't a desirable demographic to marketers. Some of the sports that made it are either ratings winner (ie rhythmic gymnastics, popular with females,) or appeal to a well off demographic. "Nobody" watches equestrian sports, but those who do make golf fans look like People of Wal Mart by comparison.
NBC is down with this decision, and it wouldn't surprise me to learn that they had a good deal of influence in it.

From a financial perspective, modern pentathlon is a sport no one cares about. It should have been taken off the Olympic schedule, not wrestling.
I think that in all honesty, this is just an attempt by the IOC to get bribes from former Soviet countries to bring wrestling back as the "conditional sport" for 2020. It is competing with baseball/softball, karate, roller hockey, and some other sports to be the 26th sport for 2020.
