I had my dream job as a forester, but unfortunately in the real world, money is the deciding factor
2 of my wife's uncles were foresters and for the same reason eventually went into the family business instead. It a real estate company that deals with large quantities of land so their degree wasn't a total waste.

ONLY way to make decent money in forestry is to buy and sell land/timber yourself. I had $4k/yr left over after bills were paid. Had to buy groceries, fuel, strippers, boose, etc and that ate every single bit of my fundage up. Can't save up money if you don't make enough to save.
My boss married into a large financial backer, so he got everything started that way. Ended up becoming the biggest hardwood timber supplier in the Southeast. I'm not about bumming money off of people though so it wasn't happening.
The guys I worked with had been registered foresters for at least 15yrs and lived in trailers.
