I've been on an elk hunt to Etolin Island here in SE. No need for a guide (resident) but it's difficult to get a permit, since so few are given out for the island elk. SE AK Moose and elk hunts are permit draws, and harder to come by.

I went two years in a row to Fishtail Ranch in Chama, NM for archery hunts. Great guide service. I plan on heading back there this year for a rifle hunt.

Went here in August, amazing experience. I know I'll catch flack for being high fence, and but it was something I'll likely never get an opportunity to do again with my dad. We aren't big game hunters and the biggest thing either of us had killed prior to this hunt was a goose. Its a first class operation from the food, to the guides, to the bulls themselves.

Did you go to the Utah or Idaho location?

Welder guide service in meeker Colorado . It was public land they went to but you cannot hunt it unless you use the outfitter . I'm wanting to say it was like 1500 bucks a person .

Idaho. We flew into Firth, ID, and it was about 45 minutes from the airport to the lodge.
The plan was to hunt free range for 3 days, then, if someone hadn't killed, to go into the preserve.
Problem wound up being the only time we could make the trip was before the season opened, so we had to stay in the fence. When I say fence, I mean 10,000 acres fenced in. It wasn't like you drove down a road and killed a bull tied to a tree. There was glassing, spotting, stalking, the whole 9 yards.
My dad had roughed it in spike camps in Montana and Canada and never saw an elk. He was ready to kill something.
And I cannot reiterate it enough, the food is freaking awesome.

Sounds pretty awesome. I'm looking to do something similar but in NM. And trust me, I have no issues with high fences
