For basic obediance I have kept mine in the house as puppies. This way I am always interacting with them. They learn my language and I learn theirs.
Best way I learned to make one stay until commanded is dont let them eat until you tell them too. make them sit. Put food out. Wait for a while then tell them to eat. They will pick it up very quickly.
There are some really good tips and books out there. Obviously, the more you read and enlighten yourself. The better you will be at training.
