I tried to explain football to an Englishman one time. He had never seen a game, and we watch an LSU game together. I gave up by the second quarter and just told him to watch us hit people. Football is absurdly complex.
Basically all sports with "goals" are very easy for even the most casual fan to start watching (soccer, basketball, hockey, etc.). I know next to nothing about handball or water polo, but I can easily watch them in the Olympics. Sports like baseball, cricket, football (which I guess has a "goal", but so many rules that you need to understand to enjoy the game), etc., are very difficult to follow if you don't know the rules beforehand.
