I give credit to Evangel, they weren't scared to play in 5A.
When has John Curtis ever played in the state's highest classification? They probably could have won a state title once every five years instead of four out of every five years. Are the people at Curtis that egotistical that they have to find the easiest division to win a state title in?
No, otherwise they wouldn't play up at all. This has already been discussed ad nauseum. The premise is that Curtis doesn't want to sacrifice the ability for their other programs to be competitive just for football to be in 5A. It was shown how horrible Evangel was in all other sports besides football during their 5A years. Curtis doesn't want to throw the rest of the school under the bus like that.

That's a solid excuse because they could have competed in the other sports as well.

Curtis was a baseball power in 4A in the 90s. They might not have won a state championship in 5A, but they could have competed. Evangel competed well in 5A baseball. If the only defintion of "competitive" is winning a state title, then you can argue that only about 5 schools in every class are competitive in any sport.
If Curtis and Evangel are unable to "compete" in the other sports, then maybe they should put a little bit more effort into making those sports successful. When your sole purpose of starting a school is to win football championships, this is a side effect.
