I've just always burned it in my monthly bonfires (I get alot of fallen limbs). I've always heard that you shouldn't burn it in a fireplace, though I don't know why.
Here is what I do know. Old seasoned hackberry seems to burn just fine. Younger unaged hackberry seems to "pop" like hell.
Never tried it in my fireplace though.
