Its called a non committable offer

Cmon yall have heard of this before.

I understand its an odd practice, and not always fair
But i do understand when academics are involved and the offer is valid as long as certain conditions are met.
"hey kid we'd love to have you on this lsu team, but you gotta get your work done in the classroom and qualify before we accept your commitment"
