That's not true they worked as Aurors, at least for a time. I'm guessing they left the ministry when it became apparent that Voldemort had infiltrated most aspects of the Ministry, similar to what he was trying to do later on in the 6th and 7th books. But they were Aurors for awhile

Also that money in their vault was all the money they had in the world I'm assuming. And since they were two people and just had a son, I'm assuming they were doing there best to save money. Nobody had touched the account for over a decade, if it accrued any interest at all I'm not sure. But for a teenager to all of a sudden get an entire households money would seem like a fortune, especially for a guy used to living under a stairwell

Not true. They were never Aurors. According to Pottermore, at least, they went directly to working with Dumbledore to fight Voldemort straight out of school. James Potter came from a wealthy, pureblood wizarding family, so he had a large inheritance that he was able to leave for his son.
