TexasTiger have you ever hunted anywhere than Texas? I've hunted all over Texas and Louisiana and a few other places as well and I can assure that if you haven't, you really shouldn't be talking.

You say you don't hunt in some high fence place and wave that as a banner of how grounded you are but almost anywhere in Texas is going to be, by comparison, like hunting a high fenced ranch if you're sitting in the swamp in LA. Because Texas is EAT THE frick UP with deer. You will see deer every time you go out. You can actually shop for the deer you want to shoot. Don't tell me you can't because I've done it for years. And never on a high fenced ranch.

I've let 12 points walk in Texas that had I seen that same deer in LA would have had me breathing heavy and having buck fever like a little kid on his first buck. Deer hunting is completely relative to where you do it. And that's why you really can't apply your version of what a trophy is to someone else unless you're sitting in stands where you can see each other.

Just sayin, get a little perspective before you start getting on your high horse.

Yes I have hunted more than just Texas, I was born in La, have hunted La/MS/TX/KS so I have a little knowledge of what I am talking about. I don't care how big the antlers of the deer are in your area of the woods, I said your goal should be to kill mature bucks.

And when you are paying good money to hunt somewhere the last thing you want to see is a guy that shots 1.5 to 2.5 year old bucks on a consistent bases. The killing of young bucks is not a good thing no matter what you try and tell yourself.

Not saying we have not all done it, but there comes a point and time where its not good management of the deer herd.

And to the poster that talked about taking his daughter hunting congrats...I do the same with mine she has and will continue to shoot deer. And she will continue to progress as a hunter. And I don't worry about the next deer we are going to take we enjoy the time we spend together in the blind. Alot of times we do more talking than hunting but thats fine too, its not about killing for me thats a bonus.
