The whole situation hinges on exactly what was said by the Liberty Bowl to him on that second conversation

The bolded part is what is wrong with your statement. With these high of stakes you always get it in writing. I'm sure the school and the bowls pass a lot of misinformation around to get the best deal possible.

In some respects I agree, and it's his job to cover his bases, So Louisiana Tech definitely screwed up there , but it's still pretty shitty and at the very least "mitigating" (lessens the blame deserved by the AD) if the Liberty bowl told them that they were in guaranteed

Exactly what Red Hawk is saying. This guy is an AD, and he's saying that they "promised him" and that it's enforcable in some way?? Give me a break. He even mentions he SIGNED an agreement with the Liberty Bowl that Tech would go to the Liberty Bowl if no Big 10 team was available. If that's the case, and the bowl later says "well, we're going to select you EVEN IF a Big 10 team is available" then you GET IT IN WRITING!!

Would he stand for extending his coach's contract with a promise? "Hey, I know a lot of schools are sniffing you and would like to hire you. I'd like to extend your contract, coach. What you say we go to the doughnut shop, discuss terms of your extension making sure you can't leave for the next 5 years, and when we agree on terms, screw the lawyers. We don't need to document it in writing." Would he ever do that? Of course not. So now he's claiming "they promised us over the phone that they would select us"?

Quite simply, he relied on an oral promise and didn't insist on a written agreement. That's stupid. He should be fired.

(Also love how he throws the coach and school President under the bus too - "but we all agreed"! So it's not just my fault, it's lots of people's fault!)

A written statement? Cajun fans won't tell you, they're too busy being dipshits over this, but ask them what they think of written agreements with bowl committees.

The irony of it all is the involvement of the Independence Bowl. Wink wink
