I think Pop sat the guys as a frick you to the league for putting this game on the end of a 4 of 5 for them while the Heat were rested. So Stern responded with a frick you of his own.

Still shouldn't do it in the middle of the season for a prime time game when no other NBA gamesare being played. It's bad form.
Stern's fine was a deterrent against future teams doing this.
The results of the game should have no bearing on Stern's decision.
