For a good semi auto, can't go wrong with a 10/22. There are more variations than I can count.

For a good lever, I also vote Henry Golden Boy. If you want to step up in caliber, you can get a Henry Big Boy in .45 Colt, .357/.38, 44 mag, and 30-30.
