Bane is Batman/Wayne's biggest opposition. He's the featured villain that moves the story along, and forces the character of Batman to progress in the story. He's the main antagonist and the Nolans have said as much in previous interviews.

The slow knife

Talia:
it’s the slow knife...the knife that takes its time, the knife that waits years without forgetting, then slips quietly between bones...that’s the knife that cuts deepest.

Bane was billed, so that you wouldn't think anything as the slow knife went about slicing him.
Bane had no beef with Batman. None. He was a tool.
Talia was the mastermind, and the executor. She wanted Batman to not only fail, but KNOW he failed in the reaches of his soul.
Bane broke his back. Talia broke him in every other way imaginable.
