I deal with breeders from time to time for hunting dogs when health and pedigrees are very important. However, the vast majority of pet owners are buying dogs based on their looks and not their function. With the large expenses, rampant health issues from inbreeding on the rise, etc there is no reason for someone like yourself, who is looking for a companion, to buy a pure breed. Save your money and save a good dog by adopting. When you come back looking for a good hog dog, duck dock, quail dog etc. then we can discuss in detail those things. I wouldn't pick a malinois, shepherd, or lab as my couch companion, but even if you are, there's one in the shelter that looks exactly like the dog you want and will make a great pet. I went to the BR shelter 3 times a week for 2 months before I found a female puppy I wanted. She's been perfect.
