I've taken most of my deer with the 30-06, several with 7mm mag., and my Dad liked his .270. There's enough variety of loads for each that any of these calibers would be fine for whitetail. Last buck I got with my Ruger No.1 in 45-70, which admittedly might have been overkill, but I saw the deer drop. I hate tracking.
This year I may use the Mosin Nagant, just for kicks. I'll be hunting in my backyard. Literally.![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Iconbooboo.gif)

My dad used to hunt out the kitchen window, and usually bagged a dear every season

I have shot a browning A-bolt stainless stalker w/ boss in .270 for the last 17 years and it has yet to let me down. I have taken 20+ deer with this rifle from 350 to 30 yds. I have had great sucess with 130gr winchester ballistic silver tips. Half inch low at 25yds 1.5 inch high at 100 and dead on at 200. just point and shoot on anything out to about 225 yds. Even at 300 it is only about 6 inches low.
