But I think Clint has a little quality over quantity. I think Clint's top 5 beats the Duke's Top 5.

Okay, I'll take the bait, because this is the real argument...1st generation film Cowboy vs. 2nd generation...Americana vs. Spaghetti...romanticism vs. realism.

The Duke:

The Shootist
Rio Bravo
Red River
True Grit
The Searchers

Clint:

Good, Bad, Ugly
The Unforgiven
Outlaw Josey Wales
A Fistful of Dollars
High Plains Drifter

Every time I look at these lists, it goes back and forth 3-2 for each.

I lean toward Wayne because of The Searchers, Red River and Rio Bravo slightly eclipsing Good, Bad, Ugly, Outlaw and Unforgiven in terms of icon status and universal critical praise.

Out of that list I've only seen The Searchers and True Grit. Rio Bravo is on my to do list though.

I've never been a big High Plains Drifter fan. I get the point and all. I'd put Pale Rider on my top 5 list.

Now if we were going Top 3, you could make the argument for Jimmy Stewart also. I'm not making that argument, but I wouldn't laugh at someone who did.

For me, True Grit is really the only JW movie that would match Unforgiven, Outlaw JW and Good, Bad & Ugly.
