Klinsmann in Friendlies vs. Klinsmann in Competitive Matches in 2012

Record in Friendlies: 5-1-1
A rather placid draw in Canada, and a "not as bad as the scoreline reflects" loss in Maryland to Brazil.
Away victories in Panama, Italy and Mexico. Very good showing in home win over Scotland.
Record in Competitive Fixtures: 1-1-1
One rather competitive 3-1 victory over Antigua & Barbuda, a team that we should have beaten by at least 4 goals.
One sloppy draw away in Guatemala, partly caused by horrible refereeing decisions (see: advantage rule of play), and stupid fouling in dangerous positions.
One shocking loss to a mediocre Jamaica, caused by atrocious tactics and stupid fouling in dangerous positions (emerges a trend?).
A three game sample is poor by any statistical measure. However, it has become apparent that Klinsmann's sides look much better in friendlies, especially in the second half when both sides can make sweeping personnel changes. Bob Bradley had a horrible record in friendlies, but only lost final round qualifiers away to Mexico and Costa Rica. His only loss at this stage of qualifying came in the final group fixture away to Trinidad having already secured qualification for the next round. Not to mention that game featured a roster full of experimental players like Freddy Adu and Chuck Davies.

Klinsmann is getting his tactics and starting 11 wrong in competitive matches. He played way too conservative last night and it cost him. When I saw the first 11 last night I knew we would struggle to earn a point. I posted the same statement in the game thread before the game started. It was plain to see that there was no way no way that trio of midfielders would ever work. Klinsmann should be able to see this if fans like us can.

It's not just that the opening tactics set us up for failure, his second half changes put us deeper in a hole.
Pulling Beckerman for Danny Williams accomplished nothing. Despite Beckerman not playing DM very well, he was the best passer in that lineup. Williams whose performances suggest that he is just a warm body. Possession players like Graham Zusi, Torres, and Corona just sat on the bench in favor of Williams.

I agree. I would have sub Torres in for Beckerman,
Corona for Gomez, and Shea for Jones. But that was before I saw Shea's performance.

What is the point of bringing in a guy like Corona and not playing him? If he would have done the same thing with Gatt I think I would have had a massive coronary.

I knew this when his 24-man squad was announced. Very little quality.

I knew it the day before the roster was announced.

We need Stu Holden to get and stay healthy. With him and Bradley in the center of the midfield we will finally have some true quality at that position. I also think Jose Torres, to a lesser extent, has some quality. He keeps the ball, plays good and quick passes, and has a very good delivery on set plays. We nee wide midfielders from somewhere. If Chandler were to finally commit he can play there. So can Lichaj. Corona maybe. Shea is inconsistent. We definitely need someone to step up.

This is our problem:
No width
No creator/destroyer in the midfield. There is nobody on the roster that I feel confident in to win the ball, retain possession or push forward with it.

Just bite the bullet and call in Gyau. Let him get a run out for a change. Let Corona get some time. That's what we should be using friendlies for

what about Jermaine Jones???????????
It sucks that we didn't have Bradley and will never have Holden. That pair would have carved up Jamaica's talentless midfield.

waaaaaay too early to tell. I personally think JK is trying to do what he did in Germany.
Expose the lack of technical development and recognition of those with latent technical capacity at a young age.
Blow the system up.
Modernize. Start anew.

Yeah that's great and all, but he's not our technical director. That job belongs to Claudio Reyna. Jurgen Klinsmann is the men's national team manager. He can make all of the grandiose claims about playing attractive football, and using the Spanish model he wants. But if he can't win against world football powers like Guatemala and Jamaica, who cares about his New Deal for American Soccer?
He's not a politician, he's a football coach.

Years ago when he was being courted, it was well known he was looking for a total control of system gig.

On paper this roster isn't half as bad as the roster for the Mexico friendly. Uncapped players Alan Gordon, Matt Besler, and Steven Beitashour aren't on the bench.
Once again Dandy, is Klinsmann a technical director or a senior team manager? If Gulati wanted to hire him as technical director, he could have. Klinsmann looked exposed tactically last night, and he doesn't have safety blanket Jogi Löw to protect him this time. Martin Vasquez is no Jogi Löw. He might as well be our Stuart Pearce.

Yeah, but part of his job is making sure that we field the best 11 we can in an attempt to win Qualifying games. Jurgen has proven to be significantly less competent than Bob Bradley at that.
