Agree. The 03 defense was the most violent, disruptive defense I've ever seen at the college level. The 03 offense was always shaky against a decent defense and it's why I always considered Flynn vastly superior to Mauck. 03 had awesome WRs but Mauck made the passing game mediocre.

But I would take Brockers, Mongtgomery, Mingo, Reid (wash with Landry), Claiborne, Taylor, and TM.
I could go with either. 2011 was deeper but 03 had some solid backups as well. just can't see anyone putting one defense far above the other.

Mauck was not great but he was way better than JL or JJ.

I wouldn't go that far. he had TO issues in a few games, but at least he could shake off his mistakes and come thru late (see UGA 1, Ole Miss).

14 INT's in 2003 and a couple of fumbles..
Lee had 16 INt's...

Fair enough. My first statement was probably too strong. And it doesn't help that 2011 just happened whereas 2003 was quite a while ago.

Best game I've ever been to.

Have to disagree there. 2003 allowed one team to crack 20 points on us (55-24 win vs. Arkansas). Shut down high-powered offenses of UGA (twice), Oklahoma (number one offense nationally, with Heisman winner), and Ole Miss (only allowed 10 offensive points).

Replay of 2003 LSU vs. Ole Miss
Great game. Was lucky enough to be there and the atmosphere was electric. I have no doubt the most raucous that stadium had been since the 60's.
The play that stands out to me was the last, the 4th and 10 when Eli tripped and game over. If you ever watch the replay you will notice that all four of our down linemen just blew up the man in front of them. Awesome. That's why Eli tripped. If he wouldn't have tripped it would not have been long afterward he'd have gone down.
I think in the comparisons between 2003 and 2011 the defenses are a wash. They were both great. And I'd give a slight edge to the offense to the 2003.
Even though Mauck's supposed strength as a game manager who didn't lose games for that you always used to hear, has been exposed here (he turned the ball over alot that year)he actually did make some plays (to Devery in that Ole Miss game, Skyler in the Georgia game) and could run well, better than JJ in fact if you ask me.

I watched the replay. The amazing thing to me was how many on that team went on to play in the pros. Seems like every play had someone who played on Sunday for at least one year.

The stats disagree with you however...

I don't know what the stats are but I have to think 2011 was better overall offensively. I know in 2011 we ran on everybody except Bama even though everybody stacked the box on us.I am excited about the possibility of us having a solid passing game so we can burn teams who try it this year.

2003 offense seemed better than 2011 bc it was more balanced but yeah 2011 put up more points.
I'd still take Mauck over JJ/JL and I'd take 2003 defense

Needing a football fix while I try to wait for the season to start,I watched the replay.LSU's passing offense was similar to last year's and Mauck threw 3 int.s,one returned for six
That first pass by Mauck was one of the worst throws I'd ever seen.....until I saw Jefferson last year. But Mauck was just okay. The defense and the running game won the championship that year. The passing game COULD have been great with Clayton & Henderson out wide, but Mauck was just an average thrower. Not many people even remember that Mauck began his time at LSU as a safety, though for a very short time.

I just think there were more playmakers on offense in 2003 and that gave them a slight edge.
As for stats, 2003 averaged about 60 more yards per game if I'm calculating correctly, and 2011 averaged 2 more points per game. One could argue who gets the edge in stats given those numbers alone.
I do think both defenses created points for their offenses and 2011 I would think, though I have not spent the time to confirm, special teams created more points for the team than 2003, and probably at a clip of more than two pts. a game, though I'm speculating.
2011 turned the ball over less. I can't deny the importance of that Doc, and that goes to your side of the discussion.

I really want to continue that emphasis going into 2012. Lsu finished with something like 9 turnovers on the year or something?
