I think this is a good estimate. Given the insane popularity of the series he knows he needs to stay out in front of the TV show. I don't think he'd want the show catching up to him because it could cause him to reveal things to the viewers that haven't yet been revealed to the readers. I'd hope he has a special place in his heart (if it, in fact, exists) for the book readers.
On a side note, A good friend of mine finished Dance with Dragons last night. Needless to say, he was very, very upset when he came to work today. He posts on TD and will begin reading this thread as soon as he finishes D&E.

December 2014 would be good too. Crossing my fingers that he's writing 'fast' but I guess we'll see what happens. Any shot that GRRM reads more sample chapters at conventions/posts them online or is all that is out now all that we'll see until the book is released?
Also, I'm not sure if that has been posted already, but it's an essay on Jon and Sansa and how their stories parallel each other. Very good read
