They should have been doing this throughout the season so they had plenty of innings left over for the end. There has been a myriad of ways they could have freed up innings for a potential playoff run without damaging him and they failed to do it.

use him in middle relief, two or three innings twice a week.
just keep him loosened up for the playoffs.
