I'd put 30-50lb power pro on a bait caster with a MH/F action rod. Use a fluoro leader when in gin clear water if you want.
I use 12lb sunline mono personally for soft plastics on a MH/F 6'6" rod. When punching or throwing in cover with a heavy weight I have a 7' H/F rod with 50lb power pro braid spooled.

Do I need to use backing or is it a waste?
It will be on a 7'7" mh rod.
