Kabota's are the best around... But I'm not sure if you can touch one for 3-4 K. I would stay away from John Dere... You are paying for the name and you can get a lot more for your money with other brands.

I picked up a 36 in hydro walk behind pull start 15 hp kohler for 1700. The pumps are the same pumps used on every hydro i have looked at heavy gauge deck its a asian counterfeit of something but it mows great at 1/2 the price of other mowers in its class. I have to keep up with 3 yards and its perfect for what i do. Most commercial mowing people trash them because most of it is made in china 
but the key parts are quality. google it you can prob find someone that has em in stock. LINK
