I kind of see it as similar to the photo printing craze. Yea there will be models cheap enough for you to do this at home, but will people want to? I think the photo printing problem had a lot to do with the cost of paper and ink. This may not be the same for the 3D printing world but its something to consider. It may be more likely to have retail centers where people can submit there designs to be created.

I worked in R&D in the oil field for 4 years and we had a couple. They are pretty badass, but they broke all the time and the material was expensive. I'm sure the technology will progress.
