GMRS frequencies do not play well with pine trees. The diameter of a typical pine needle is about the same diameter as a GMRS signal pulse.

Range is going to be a factor of wattage and antenna length. Don't pay attention to advertised "range". Find out the wattage. Many of them are .5 watt. I think 2 is the max.

I have a good 2-watt set (Midland) and they only get about a half mile in Houston (trees, houses, and lots of ambient "noise").

Out in New Mexico, they reach at least 20 miles line of sight.
