This started when NCAA went to 4 team Regional format under skip it was a different format.
Game 1
Game 2
Game 3 (Winner of 1 vs. 2)
Game 4 (Loser of 1 vs. 2)
Game 5 (Loser of 3 vs. Winner of 4)
Game 6 (Winner of 3 vs. Winner of 5)
Game 7 (If necessary (Winner 5 wins then Game 7 is necessary)

Started in 1999, so we did play the early game during Skip's last 3 years.

I thought the reason we play the early game on Friday was that just in case we lose, there is a longer turnaround for game 3.
Example: Losing Friday night's game and then having to play the early game on Saturday.
