He is 0-10 vs. ranked teams during his time at Memphis.
He's 34 years old.
You're not getting a finished product in Pastner as a coach. You're getting a premier recruiter who will stock your roster with elite talent, and hopefully he gets better as the years pass.
Even his detractors admit he's a better coach now than he was when he got the job. Most guys who are head coaches in their early 30's are coaching at places like Fairleigh Dickinson or Appalachian State or Northern Arizona, where the competition in the league is pretty slim. Pastner's league, even though it's not one of the toughest, has him up against coaches like Tim Floyd, Mike Davis (until a few weeks ago) and Larry Eustachy. Those are some pretty hardened veteran guys for a 32-33 year old coach to go up against, and he's still won 35 conference games in three years. Could have done better, but it's not bad for a rookie.
And you're getting a high-energy coach with a big personality and the ability to deliver marquee recruits who will get the fans excited.
That's what you get with Pastner. Memphis fans compare him to Calipari, and that's pretty much the same comparison Smoke Laval got at LSU and Ray Perkins got at Alabama. Anything short of national championships and Pastner's a bum - that's what happens when you replace a legend. I wouldn't sell this guy short based on those circumstances.
