its just plain stupid to even consider the conference champ stipulation especially with all conferences? please.
if im notre dame (or any other independent) im joining the MAC asap; you are all but guaranteed a spot in the *playoffs* every single season.

actually, that makes it worse
I wouldn't limit it to only conference winners, but 2011 looks more like an outlier, most years in the BCS era the top 4 conference winners are in the top 6 at worst. Using it as a kind of tie breaker, Oregon over Stanford for example
