The book is essentially two hundred pages of the mom complaining that people aren't nice to her in the grocery store.

There's 2 or 3 instances like that, but I mean, if anyone can pull it off, it's Tilda, right?

Did you happen to read it because it's an Orange Prize winner? Usually their selections are solid. I've never read one that didn't impress me, but I think I can see how Kevin could be a little too mopey. Ramsay trims everything down to the economy of a film. While it definitely is 120 miuntes of discomfort, for me, it was so stylish and well done I didn't see that as a fault.
