Lump is better, but people use briquettes because they're easier and you can light with lighter fluid.

I have a primo XL ceramic pit. On low and slow cooks I've run my pit 24 hours on a 10 lb bag of RO lump. I still had a bit less than 1/2 of it left. I'll qualify this by saying I was using a digi Q.
