The decision did come down to Mahtook and Dugas and LSU chose the right one there. Mahtook contributed to a national title. Dugas hasn't been to Omaha.

The mistake that was made was taking someone like Dishon over Dugas but that's not easy decisions to make. I do remember Dugas' average his sr year was pretty gaudy but baseball is hard to project to the next level.

I've seen a lot of responses like this. Mahtook, while very important to the National Title team, was not the Mahtook of the past two years. Further, outside of Homers and an edge in RBI (likely attributable to the fact that Mahtook batted in the middle of the lineup while Dugas led off) it could easily be argued Dugas was more productive than Mahtook that specific year. While I recognize Mahtook has that HUGE at bat in the first game against Tejas, Dugas put up very impressive and comparable numbers in year one.

Mahtook exploded in the subsequent years widening the gap, but to base the decision on that first year probably isn't the best indicator.
