I know several folks on here (including myself) are fans of Jefferson's Reserve and had been curious about the Presidential Select. I had recently heard a rumor that this bourbon was actually stock of the Stitzel-Weller distillery (the folks that used to bring you Pappy Van Winkle). I had also heard that it was likely from the actual stock of Pappy Van Winkle, some of which was sold when the Stitzel-Weller distillery closed in the early 90s. The folks at McLain & Kyne (distillery that puts out Jefferson products) sat on the barrels until they started releasing it as the Jefferson Presidential Select. Reportedly, all of it has now been bottled.

One of my friends who owns a local wine and liquor store recently did a side by side tasting of Pappy Van 15, 20 and the Presidential Select and he said that the Presidential Select is better than the Pappy 15 and almost as good as the 20. He said that it was very close in character to the Pappy line and likely the subtle differences are just the differences that the extra years in the barrel give.

I'll soon do the same side by side tasting and will let y'all know what I think. Until then, just wanted to make sure y'all are aware of it while they still have good stock.

The 17 year is from last year. This year, they released the rest of the stock as an 18 year.

Ah. I've tried the 17-year a few times and love it. Maybe my favorite bourbon if price isn't a factor. I'll have to look for the 18.

Still pretty easy to find. Obviously most of the stores don't even really know what they have. I was talking to an owner who had several bottles about what I had heard then later verified and he had no idea. It has been going up in price slightly so maybe the word is getting out. There's a local store that bought a whole barrel of it and had it bottled for them. They bought it unfiltered and supposedly, it's even better in its raw form.

What is price? I was going to add a couple bottles of scotch to the collection this week, but I might give this a whirl.

ETA: I see it online at about $80-$100. That's a pricey bourbon, but it might be a good one to add to the collection.

Thanks for tip.

I've seen the 17 year as cheap as $74 (not much of the 17 year left on shelves). Most of the 18 year has been between $80-$90 in the stores when I've seen it. It's definitely a pricey bourbon, but when you consider that it's basically Pappy Van Winkle (normally sells for $150 or greater if you can find it), it's a steal at under $100.

Update to add that it's obviously already getting tougher to get this bourbon in the stores. Sounds like they are starting to limit the amount the local places can buy (likely another case or so each). The price will accordingly likely start increasing.

I'll also be going tonight or tomorrow to do a line tasting of it against the Pappy 15 and 20. Also will likely sample the George T Stagg just to make it a great night. Will report the findings.

Just got back from the restaurant. Did a flight of Pappy Van Winkle 15 year, Jefferson Presidential Select 17 year, Pappy Van Winkle 20 year, then finished it off with George T Stagg. I'll get some tasting notes together and post them later. Until then, a teaser photo.

First review: George T Stagg. It's bottled at 140+ proof so it's a heavyweight to say the least. I was very impressed at its complexity as well as its punch. It's nice to have a great bourbon bottled at cask strength to have something different every once in a while. For those interested in where it comes from, it's part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection put out once a year. It recently won top spirit in the world by a journal LINK. It knocked Highland Park 18 from that spot. It's a bit difficult to find, but great stuff!

Nose: Lots of banana, vanilla, little bit of toffee, almonds, and molasses

Taste: Holy Moly! This stuff will take your breath away. Intense cinnamon and cloves. Mild dried fruits and nuts, rum, bananas, vanilla. Cutting it with a couple drops of water lessens the heat and helps to taste those sweet flavors

Finish: Extremely long; nice warmth with oakiness and leather

I need to try some of that. I always have a bottle of Booker's on hand for something with a little more punch.

Don't believe avenue got their shipment of Pappy this year...

It's where I first had the 20 last year around this time, but asked the upstairs bartender who said he hadn't seen it yet, and wasn't sure they would get it.

I asked about about the Jefferson 18 at Calandro's last night. The guy said that Louisiana wasn't getting any, but I doubt he knows his shite really.

Spec's has it listed on their site for $90.
