If I had to guess, I believe JJ endeared himself to Miles when he was a wild eyed freshman who worked hard and said "yes sir." And I think Miles decided he was the QB to bring us the championship.
Miles saw the kid have spurts of greatness. A good bowl game performance, or two. And I believe, with good cause it could be argued, that Miles believed/hoped this was JJ's year to pull it all together and be that consistent QB. Big, strong, can run and pass.
Unfortunately, JJ didn't stand a chance against Saban. To be fair, any QB would have had trouble. Saban is the process coach, the coach that is obsessed with detail. Whereas, Miles is the more emotional driven coach. And it caused him to stay with JJ the whole game, maybe. just an idea.
As someone who has worked with youth leagues for many years, and coached hundreds of games, it happens. Sometimes the best player doesn't come through in the clutch. But if the coach believes hes the best player, they can't seem to see the obvious.
I say all this assuming there are no personal issues with JL.
