My XBL account got hacked...

And literally I read this article about 3 hours before it happened
LINK
Talk about coincidence. Was at work and got an email saying "your credit card could not be used to purchase 60,000 microsoft points". So I'm thinking shite this isn't good. I sign in and see my 2,000 microsoft points I had on the account was now at 0, and I was playing FIFA 12 (which I don't even own) just like the article states. Called xbox live and after about 30 minutes all is done and now I can't get on xbox live until the "investigation" is complete.
Has this happened to anybody else? What can I expect down time wise? Happened to my friend the other month and he said some dude in Russia was the culprit. I lucked out since the card on my account was expired or else they would have ran that sucker up I bet, word of advice, only use pre paid microsoft points from now on. I feel like complaining that I missed the national championship game (which I really did since I don't have espn, and had to go to a bar to watch it) and now going to miss some DLC for GOW.

Keep on Microsoft about the investigation. They say it will take somewhere around 25 days to complete but my friend got hers hacked and when she called to check in on the investigation about ~2 weeks in they hadn't even started yet.

It happened to Broke. He just got his account back after 2 months

Yeah, shite happened to me a few months back. I emailed them a couple of times about it and they went into their investigation or whatever.
I think it took a couple of weeks, but they pretty much just had me change my password.

shite. 2 months?!?
Good god what kind of compensation was offered? For that amount of time I'd be demanding a free 6 months code or game
And I changed my password, which I recommend anybody reading this go ahead and do now. Also I wonder if a password for the account log in where you do a 4 button combination would have helped? I'm not sure how I got hacked, I guess just unlucky but me and my friend have very high gamerscores so maybe that made us a target?

I think they gave him a free month

yeah something like 68 days.

For anyone that has had this happen to them, how do you know when the "investigation" is done and you can sign online again? Do you get a phone call? email? just by signing on one day? I better be getting my points back. I know you can raise hell and they'll eventually give in from past friends experiences where they tried offering bs one month live cards and ended up coughing up free wireless controllers

man, this really sucks! I'm glad I got rid of my XBL gold account. How are people hacking accounts?

No idea, maybe stealing the passwords to the windows live ID?
Posted on 1/10/12 at 1:19 pm to sbr2
I gotta think its RUSSIANS. haha. I had to change my password for EVERYTHING. That password was the one I use for just about all my stuff so hopefully this isn't a problem that develops into something bigger involving my banks or something. On that article I posted it says
And sure enough they played FIFA on my account. Wondering how the hell EA thought this was a good idea?

You might find yourself in a bind not necessarily if you own FIFA 12, but because of it. EA's soccer sim allows hackers to launder real-world money by way of the in-game economy. They dig their way into your account using a stolen password, which compromises your account.

So far if you google microsoft hack and fifa they are all recent articles. I think microsoft is being hush hush about it for now (maybe to try and fix the problem, but most likely because they aren't admitting its a widespread problem yet), and it doesn't look like its a problem on ps3 as of now.
On the articles I'm reading it seems like gmail accounts may be to blame? Sure enough that's what I had, also if your paypal is linked to your windows live ID, go ahead and get rid of that method also. If they hack your live and have access to that paypal account (which is most likely linked to your bank checking/savings account) that would be all out nightmare. Stick to prepaid cards, and learn from me to keep a near 0 balance on microsoft points. I had about 2,000 or so and hoping I get those back

You will get 0 updates on the progress. You will get an email offering you a free 1 month card. This is after you open up the unauthorized access investigation. They will lock your account down. Mine was migrated to Columbia so it took longer. I think 69 days total. You will get your points back and some live time for free. It's a HUGE pain in the arse and eventually it will all work out. But expect to be down a few weeks.
Sadly it happened to me and it's pretty much an epidemic right now that is picking up speed.

Just got off the phone. They canceled auto renew, remove the credit card, and had to cancel my subscription and emailed me a code to sign back up for the remainder of my 12 month gold account. I'm good with that. As long as my credit card is no longer associated with it I'm happy
I didn't have gmail. I was using my normal email. Still, not worth the risk.

One other thing, I now have to put in my password if I log onto any other console than mine. And I also have a 4 button code that I punch in on my console. Every little bit helps.
And did you happen to have an EA account?
